How is Trinity River Mission Making a Difference?

Trinity River Mission offers educational programs to help build the foundation necessary to support and encourage high school graduation and post-secondary studies. The following are the core programs that TRM offers.

Homework Help

After school homework help with assistance from staff and volunteers. Students complete their school assignments and supplementary extended learning activities. Each has his or her file signed for attendance, work completion and progress measures. Afterwards, children may use the Computer Lab. The program includes enrichment activities for children and families, such as those offered by the Science Place. Homework Help serves more 200 students from kindergarten through 6th grade and constantly has a waiting list.

Kids CafE

This cafe serves hot meals and snacks 4 days each week in collaboration with the North Texas Food Bank and TRM's Corporate Sponsor Capital One. TRM is proud to acknowledge these outstanding partners in providing nutritious meals for children who may not have enough or the right kinds of food in their diet.

Tutor Power Hour

Students meet weekly with an assigned literacy tutor who concentrates on developing literacy skills in reading and writing. This program is well-known in Dallas' educational circles and is utilized as a model for other literacy programs. More than 140 students in grades 3 - 12 participate in the Tutor Power Hour. There are 68 trained tutors.

Reading Buddies

Children aged 4-8 attend pre-literacy activities with trained youth and adult volunteers to read aloud in a small group setting. Reading aloud for children is a significant factor in students’ success in reading. The activity increases their vocabulary and understanding of syntax.

Believe & Achieve Scholarship Program

Over 120 youth, 6th through 12th grade, are paired with Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors and work closely with the students to encourage strong academic success, improve self-esteem, and pursue post-secondary education (academic or vocational). Upon successful completion in all components of the program and high school graduation, students receive a $4,000 scholarship from Trinity River Mission if they continue onto college or vocational schools.

Computer Lab

More than 30 computers with internet capability are available to all students to learn English pronunciation, use age-appropriate learning software. Students can work on research papers and other classroom assignments as well.
