Volunteer Job Descriptions

Tutor Power Hour – Literacy Tutor (HIGH NEED!)

A one to one effective literacy tutoring hour for children in grades 3-12th, focused on reading and writing with 2 children for one hour each per week. Objectives are to teach and re-teach concepts and strategies for improved reading skills; to introduce quality literature; have children read to, read with, and read by themselves; and to expand opportunities for children to enjoy and love reading and writing. Tutors are provided with curriculum, tutoring strategies, and regular support. Must complete application process including criminal background check, and attend literacy training. College degree preferred.

Tutor Power Hour – Online Math Tutor (HIGH NEED!)

A one-on-one effective online math tutoring hour for children in grades 2-12th. Tutors meet online with 1-2 children for one hour each per week, utilizing a headset and electronic writing pad that allows student and tutor to virtually communicate and follow the day’s curriculum. Tutors are matched with student(s) based on tutor’s math ability and interests and are provided with curriculum, tutoring strategies, and regular support. Must complete application process, including criminal background check, and complete math tutoring training. College degree preferred.

Believe & Achieve Mentor (HIGH NEED!)

To support, motivate, and encourage students in grades 6th-12th to graduate from high school and to promote youth leadership and belief in one’s self. Mentors must commit to meeting with their student at least twice per month, communicate with TRM’s Youth and Alumni Manager at least once per month, and track academic success. Must complete application process including criminal background check. College degree preferred.

Homework Helper

Assist children in kindergarten through 5th grade with homework and other academic exercises to enhance academic achievement. Check for completeness, correctness, and neatness. Must complete application process including criminal background check.

Homework Help to Onward Thinking (H2O) Volunteer

Assist children in 1st-6th grades with an academic and/or behavioral challenge(s) in completion of homework and other academic and social-emotional exercises to enhance academic achievement. Volunteers work one-on-one with students. Check for completeness, correctness, and neatness. Special training provided. Must complete application process including criminal background check.

Tutor Power Hour – Reading Buddy

A one to group reading hour that provides kindergarten through 2nd grade students effective tutoring focused on reading aloud, shared reading, and writing. Objectives are to teach and reteach concepts and strategies for improved reading skills; to introduce quality literature; have children read to, read with, and read by themselves; and to expand opportunities for children to enjoy and love reading and writing. Must complete application process including criminal background check, and attend literacy training.

Computer Aid

Assist, instruct, and monitor students in the usage of computers including the internet.

General Help Tutor

Assist, and instruct students with Math, Science, History, Calculus, etc:

Resource Librarian

Assist staff with books and resource materials.

 

One-Time Volunteer Opportunity

Spend your afternoon assisting K-12th grade students with their homework assignments. Engage with them in fun STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) activities, or enjoy reading a book together in our library! Have your own idea? We’re welcome to that too! This opportunity can be done solo or with a group of friends/co-workers. Must complete application process including criminal background check.

Large Group Volunteer Opportunity

TRM is happy to work with your large group of friends/co-workers to develop a volunteer opportunity that meets everyone’s needs. Past examples include re-painting TRM’s walls, turning an office into a staff break room, re-organizing TRM’s Resource and Supply Rooms, developing a “Camp Read-A-Lot” event for students, and more. Must complete application process including criminal background check.

 

Seasonal Volunteer Opportunities

Sponsor a TRM Event or Recruit a Group of Friends/Co-Workers to Sponsor

Gather your friends and co-workers to host a fundraiser in TRM’s honor. Raise money, school supplies, candy, college supplies for graduating seniors, and more. Then, volunteer on the special day! TRM Events include:

  • Back 2 School (August)
  • Trunk or Treat (October)
  • TRM Thanksgiving Dinner (Thursday before Thanksgiving)
  • Family Connection’s Holiday Gift Drive and Celebration (December)
  • Dia de los Niños (Day of the Kid) (April)
  • Mother’s Day (May)
  • End of Year Celebration (May)
  • Mission: Possible! Graduation Ceremony (June)
  • Family Picnic (June)
  • End of Summer Celebration (July)

Family Connection Holiday Gift Drive and Celebration

Help TRM make the holidays bright for TRM families! Volunteer individually or with your family and friends to sponsor a TRM family and shop for holiday gifts, make a holiday food gift basket, and/or volunteer during the special day when we all gather together, volunteers and TRM families alike, to wrap presents and enjoy in a holiday meal!
