“Trinity River Mission has helped me through my entire life,” says Vicente, a 17 year old high school graduate, part-time worker, and TRM volunteer.

Vicente, who began coming to TRM in the fourth grade was drawn to the organization because of its familial atmosphere. Once he was hooked, Vicente could be found at TRM practically every day. He credits TRM with giving him the trust and confidence for public speaking, a skill which eventually landed him a role on School Zone Dallas, a news and information program for Dallas schools.

Having received an Associate’s degree concurrently with his high school diploma, Vicente is ready to pursue a career in marketing and advertising. According to the recent graduate, because of TRM, “I really have no limit. Nothing is going to discourage me.”

TRM’s New Pilot Program, H2O, Helps Students Like Kenneth

Kenneth is a 5th grade student who has been attending Trinity River Mission since 2012 and is currently enrolled in TRM’s Homework Help program. Kenneth has always been a great kid but, in the past year or so, behavior issues have taken a toll on Kenneth’s grades. Speaking negatively about himself and others on an almost daily basis, it was a challenge for TRM staff to positively engage Kenneth in his school work.

However, thanks to a new pilot program at TRM called Homework Help 2 Onward Thinking or H2O, which provides intensive, one-on-one homework assistance for students in need of individual attention, Kenneth has made dramatic improvements! Kenneth has gained more self-confidence and has shown increased social skills with others (making jokes, making friends, communicating with staff with enthusiasm, etc.). Kenneth’s behavior challenges have also decreased. He no longer speaks negatively about himself or others. And, to top it all off, Kenneth has been accepted into Uplift Williams Preparatory – a BIG deal for his mom who knew that the local middle school could not provide the support Kenneth needed. We have high hopes that Kenneth will pass the 5th grade and can’t wait to see what’s in store for him!

Board Member Spotlight

It started with a phone call from a friend. After learning about the important work being done by TRM, Dawn Weeks Spalding decided to lend a hand.

In 2011, she served as co-chair of TRM’s annual fundraiser, Mission Ole; she joined TRM’s board of directors; and she became a mentor to TRM student, Georgette. All in addition to running a company, Spalding Marketing Solutions, Inc., and volunteering for numerous other charities and charitable events, including The Cattle Baron’s Ball, Heroes for Children, Genesis Women’s Shelter, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, National Kidney Foundation of North Texas, The Salvation Army, and The Family Place.

We asked Dawn to tell us about her experience as a mentor. “Georgette is such a joy and was easy to mentor,” says Dawn. “She already had her vision of who she wanted to become and why. Her dream is to become a physician. Her reason is to help her mom, who was suffering from several health issues that no one could diagnose.”

Dawn’s goal was to instill confidence in Georgette, whose self-esteem was a bit low. “I think I was able to convince her she was as good as, if not better than, anyone she will ever meet, and to hold her head high.”

To help her achieve her dream, Dawn took Georgette to visit several college campuses in North Texas and Waco. They also indulged in a little fun by going out bowling, visiting museums, and other extracurricular activities. Georgette graduated high school this spring, and is preparing for college life at Texas Woman’s University. “I could not be more proud of all her hard work. She will have a great future!”

Dawn’s advice for other kids currently enrolled at TRM is to follow Georgette’s work ethic. “Knowledge is power. Education is a great equalizer. Get as much as you can from your education. It will lead you to subjects you are passionate about and help you find something you will want to do every day.”

Along with Georgette, we thank Dawn for her passion and commitment to TRM!

All in the Family

For more than two decades, Deisy Martinez has been walking through the doors at TRM. She began attending as a student when she was six years old. Living in a neighborhood that was surrounded by gangs, drugs, and violence, TRM provided her with a safe place to go with people that cared about her. TRM also helped her overcome the language barrier that she was struggling with in school. “I was exposed to so many opportunities that other kids in my neighborhood did not have,” says Deisy. “TRM was my second home, and I knew they believed in me!”

Through TRM’s Believe and Achieve program, Deisy learned about getting involved and giving back to the community. “The family environment that TRM provides to the students and families is not seen anywhere else. I saw the difference it made in my life, and I knew I wanted to continue to do this.” For the past 13 years, Deisy has held many positions at TRM, ranging from summer intern after graduating to her current position as Outreach Manager.

Deisy’s son, Armando Jr., is a third grader that has been attending TRM since he was four. His biggest challenge in school is math, but he says that getting help with his math homework has made it become easier. His advice for other kids currently enrolled at TRM is to “Come every day!”

Deisy continues to give back to the community that originally helped her, and she is thankful for the generosity of TRM’s supporters. “Without TRM, my mentors, and tutors, I don’t know where I would be today. We are blessed in West Dallas to have such a unique and loving organization that truly cares and focuses on the needs of our children and families.”

Deisy’s son agrees, “I love coming to TRM. I love my mom’s job. And I love what she does!” So do we, Armando Jr.

Meet Rosaerlinda

Rosaerlinda Cisneros is about to embark on her senior year at Texas A&M University, as she prepares to graduate in May 2014 with a degree in Environmental Geosciences and minor in Atmospheric Sciences. Rosa has received her iconic Aggie ring, a true symbol of Rosa’s great academic achievements throughout the years from the university she has dreamed of attending since she was a little girl. But it wasn’t always an easy road for Rosaerlinda; and her story could have been a great deal different — if it hadn’t been for TRM.

We sat down with Rosaerlinda to hear her tale of the events leading up to her high school graduation and the reason why she almost (thankfully!) didn’t go to A&M:
(Note: Responses have been edited but no new information or responses have been input.)

How old where you when you started coming to TRM?

I began attending TRM in the first grade when I was about 5 years old. I participated in almost all of the programs offered- including Homework Help, Tutor Power Hour,  and Believe & Achieve. I also volunteered as a Reading Buddy.

What high school did you attend?

I attended the Law Magnet at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center.

Tell us about your experience with your high school guidance counselor as you prepared to apply to college.

Unfortunately, my counselor wasn’t the most encouraging guidance one could have. She would have a tendency to focus on the top 10% of the graduating class since they would receive automatic admission to any university in Texas- but would basically have no hope for the other 90% to be admitted into any highly ranked university. Since I was in the top
25th percentile, of a graduating class of 94 students, she would tell me how I shouldn’t apply to Texas A&M because of my rank and, instead, would recommend other universities I could apply to. What affected me the most was how she took away my dream of attending Texas A&M for a split second. Thankfully, my mentor and Executive Director of TRM, Dolores, and all the other TRM staff gave me the hope and encouragement to apply to Texas A&M. Therefore, a couple of weeks later, I submitted my application for a full and thorough review to Texas A&M.

Where there any other obstacles you faced in high school?

The Law Magnet is a great high school and I feel very fortunate to have been able to attend. They prepared us for college well by providing us with the best education available within DISD schools.

Tell us about the role your mentor, Dolores, played in your high school and college experience.

Dolores played such a big role when it came to applying to college. She was there for me by providing assistance, guidance, and encouragement. What my high school counselor lacked, I was fortunate to receive from Dolores. One moment I remember the most is how she once told me to take all the negative things another person can tell you, and turn them into something positive. In this case, with the negative comments I received from my counselor, I turned them into something positive. Instead of her comments bringing me down, it made me want to go to A&M even more just to prove her wrong. So, when it came time to complete my application, Dolores helped me put all of the documents together, took me to Big Brothers Big Sisters to receive assistance working on my application essays, and even helped me prepare for the SAT. After a couple of months of waiting with bated breath, I received my acceptance letter!

What do you want to do after graduation?

My knowledge and love for the environment has grown so much in these past few years studying how everything in our planet works together. With my degree, I want to pursue a career in climate change where I hope to make an impact in the option of future energy sources and encourage conservation for the bettering of our planet.

Do you have any advice for kids currently enrolled at TRM?

Some advice I would give the currently enrolled students, especially Believe & Achieve, is to take advantage and learn as much as possible from what TRM has to offer. Everything they do has a purpose- although the students may not see it then; they will definitely see it in the future. Whether they have to attend workshops, career fairs, campus visits, or even field trips- it all has a purpose. In the future, they will surely see how they can apply what they learned in those workshops to real life situations — they may even find a career of interest that they previously hadn’t considered! With field trips, it will be a reminder that it’s important to simply have fun and interact with others.

Do you have anything you’d like to say to our donors, mentors and volunteers?

I would like to say thanks to all our donors, mentors, and volunteers. Their contributions to TRM are immensely appreciated and will surely impact many students’ lives. Without their help TRM would not be the wonderful organization it is today.

TRM is Why I’m Here

Jose Hernandez is a 2013 graduate of TRM, graduating from Middle College High School at El Centro College. Despite still being a teenager, however, Jose, a graceful, polite, and very well-spoken young man, has big dreams and goals he plans to achieve. Having been accepted to Purdue University in Indiana to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Jose was surprised to learn that he has also been named a Gates Millennium Scholar, receiving a full ride to Purdue to obtain his undergraduate degree with the possibility of also receiving a full ride to obtain his graduate degree!

TRM spent some time speaking with Jose about these big events happening in his life and how he has become the person he is today and, well, the most we can say is, THIS is what it’s all about. Jose is the reason TRM continues to do what we do. We can only hope for all of our students to be the kind of role model Jose is.

Interview Transcript with Jose Hernandez

(Note: Responses have been edited but no new information or responses have been input.)

What was your upbringing like?

Jose:I grew up in West Dallas and have lived here most of my life. My parents both came over from Mexico in the mid-90s. We lived in Houston for a brief time before re-settling in West Dallas. I have two younger brothers and two younger sisters. I started at TRM in the first grade, enrolling in Homework Help and Reading Buddies since I had a bit of trouble with my English literacy. Once I reached sixth grade and entered the Believe & Achieve program, I began to volunteer as a Reading Buddy to the younger students as both a way of giving back and to continue to improve my reading skills.

I am the first member of my family to graduate from high school and also the first to go to college.

What have been your biggest struggles or challenges you faced, academically or personally?

Jose: Well, of course, senior year was tough. I had a lot of academic and extracurricular responsibilities combined with getting ready to graduate. However, my biggest struggle came when I was in the first grade. I began to receive homework assignments in English. Unfortunately, my parents were not able to help me understand and do my homework because they did not know English. That is when I started to go to TRM. TRM was able to help me better understand the homework and improve my English at the same time. TRM is why I’m here.

What are you most excited about as you make the transition from high school to college?

Jose: I’m most excited to be a role model to my younger siblings and to show them that hard work and dedication can make the impossible possible.

What are you most nervous about?

Jose: Failure. I’m nervous about going off to college and disappointing my family, TRM, and my friends. I’m also nervous about being away from my family.

What are your goals or aspirations for the future?

Jose: Well, my first goal, I’m already meeting, which is to go to college. After that, I really want to become an automotive engineer and then to design and build a car.

Once I’ve gotten my degree, I’d really like to come back to TRM and host workshops for the students, teaching them building and engineering skills. I want to be able to show them that there is a whole world out there for them to explore.

Who has had the most positive influence on you?

Jose: There are three people who really come to mind. Number one: My dad, Matilde. My dad is my role model. He came over to a country without knowing the language but, through hard work and dedication, he was able to make it. It’s because of him that I am who I am today. Number two: My high school counselor, Ms. Alexander. She’s always been there for me. When I was first applying for colleges, Purdue was nowhere near my aspirations. I only applied because they have one of the best engineering programs but I didn’t think I’d get in. Once I did get in, I had a big decision to make. I could go to Purdue or go to a state school in Texas. However, money was a big issue for me and I wasn’t sure how I would afford Purdue. Ms. Alexander asked me, “If you had the money to go wherever you want, where would you go?” My immediate answer was, “Purdue.” Her answer was, “Well, that’s it,” and that was it. Number three: My friends, Eric, Lilly, and Camille. They have always been there for me. We have this dream for all four of us to grow old together, like the four main characters in the show, “How I Met Your Mother.” It’s cool because all four of us are going off to college. We all made it.

How has TRM made an impact, if any, in your academic and personal life?

Jose: TRM has played a huge part in my life. The whole program has shaped me as a person, as an individual. It’s like a second home. The people are amazing and they really helped me improve my reading through Reading Buddies. I was also really shy coming into high school but TRM was able to take me out of my comfort zone and, now, I’m more comfortable doing public speaking.

TRM put the idea of college into my mind, to look into the future and go after it.

Woman with a Mission

“Breaking the cycle of poverty…how is this possible without a helping hand? As an immigrant from El Salvador, my future was pre-determined…get pregnant, drop-out of school, work long hours with minimum wages, live in West Dallas for the rest of my life. However, there was one difference in my life; the staff from TRM was not going to let this happen. With the help and guidance of my tutors, mentors and friends from TRM, my future changed and in turn, my family’s future is more promising. It’s amazing what education can do for an individual and the ripple affect that it has on their family. I am a graduate of the Government and Law Magnet High School, 1995, SMU-Bachelor of Arts, 1999, SMU-Masters in Bilingual Education, 2004, and the Gilbert Cuellar Elementary School Teacher of the Year, 2005-2006. Determination and self-motivation is the key to success but guidance and support are indispensable. Thank you for investing in the education of all the Elsy’s in West Dallas but most importantly, in the lives of our children who are the future of this beautiful country.”

– Elsy Serpas-Hernandez

Laura’s Story

My name is Laura Baez. I have been attending the Trinity River Mission since first grade, so it’s been a little over 12 years. I am currently a graduate of Townview’s Government and Law Magnet in Dallas. When I think about the Mission, the first word that comes to mind is “home”. It has been like a second home throughout these years because the Mission’s staff and volunteers have offered support, understanding, and above all a sense of love.

My story begins when I was about eight. My parents didn’t know a word in English, so they looked for ways in which someone could help me with my homework. I then started coming for Homework Help. I wouldn’t leave the Mission until I was finished with ALL my homework (that’s how determined I was), and sure enough there was always someone there to help and stay as long as needed. I also wouldn’t leave until I got a healthy and hearty meal from the Kid’s Café.

I was later introduced to the Tutor Power Hour, and was paired with a tutor who would help me improve my reading and writing skills. I went through several tutors, before coming to my current tutor, Christina Sears. Christy has made the greatest impact in my life. She has been my tutor for a little over 6 years. Over the years, my relationship to Christy has evolved from tutor to mentor and most gratifyingly, to friend. Most importantly, she has believed in me, even when I found myself doubting or just lost hope, and you know what sometimes that’s all you need: for one person to believe in you. I always look to her for advice and counseling and have become my confidant.

In 7th grade, I was accepted to participate in the Believe & Achieve Program. This program has made a great impact in my life. Not only has it kept me focused to graduate from high school, but they have made it possible to look beyond high school and see college. I am happy to say that with their help I was motivated to apply to college and looked to see the previous B&A graduates and knowing that I too, could make it. Most of my classmates attended different high schools but we were able to stay in touch through our monthly meetings and activities of B&A. Within this program I feel we have created a family. We even call our B&A coordinator, Terry Contreras, “grandma”. She has been like my guardian angel. She is our biggest fan, teacher, counselor, cheerleader, friend, and we love her for that.

The Believe & Achieve program has also given me a sense of accomplishment because not only does the community give to us, but we give back to the community as well. One of the many ways that we give back to the community is through a program called “Reading Buddy”. Every year we are paired with a little kid from the neighborhood to help them improve their reading skills. I am overjoyed when doing this because I was once in their position. Spanish was my native language, yet I had to learn English to be able to keep up.

As my family has grown to include three younger siblings, I have developed a strong sense of responsibility to set a positive example for my younger siblings. And the Mission has been there along my journey and helped me immensely in many aspects of life. The staff and volunteer’s support, guidance, and love gave me the confidence to make my dreams into a reality. I can proudly say that I am attending Southern Methodist University this fall and enjoying it immensely.

Lastly, I want to thank you and know that your contributions are immensely appreciated and impact our lives in the long run.
